Branson also eyes ban on meth additive
Aldermen could soon be considering whether Branson will be the next city to crack down on the distribution of methamphetamine precursors ephedrine or pseudoephedrine. “Nearly every community in southwest Missouri, I think, struggles with the issue of what to do about the proliferation of methamphetamine laboratories and production,” said Alderman Patrick Parnell. “The substance imposes a huge cost on society, and it is a threat to the health, safety and welfare.” Last week, Hollister aldermen gave first round approval to an ordinance that would ban the sale of medicine containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine without a prescription in Hollister. If approved on final reading next week, Hollister would become the 32nd Missouri city to pass such a law. Ephedrine or pseudoephedrine are key ingredients in methamphetamine production. “In the absence of these chemicals, methamphetamine cannot be produced,” Parnell said. “The communities who have taken this path obviously hope by limiting access to these precursor chemicals, it will make it more difficult for methamphetamine manufacturers to produce their drug thereby reduce the number of meth labs.” Parnell said when he publicly introduced the topic during aldermen reports Tuesday, he didn’t know whether it was the right direction for Branson. “A few of us on this board feel it is worth looking into it,” he said. City administrator Dean Kruithof said he had already had the city’s attorney William Duston look into the idea. Kruithof said he has also talked to Branson Police Chief Kent Crutcher. “He has some thought about this, how it works and his experience with this,” Kruithof said. The city will be looking at all angles of the issue. “I think the key thing for us is how do we make a law that is going to be very inconvenience for the meth makers … but also at the same time makes sure we are not inconveniencing the public,” Kruithof said. “Unfortunately, the meth makers are inconveniencing the public in many many ways.” Aldermen plan to discuss in the topic in a future study session.
